In one of the courses I'm currently taking, we started talking about rituals. Are they really necessary? Do we need them to feel connected to ourselves, or have we perhaps moved so far away from simplicity that we now need to create special moments just to experience something that should come naturally to us?
This conversation really got me thinking about my own journey, the rituals I've created over the years and how much they have supported me. And I came to a little realisation. Perhaps rituals aren't something we need forever, but something that helps us find our way back to ourselves until being present becomes a natural part of how we live.
I believe that in the Western world we live in today, these little anchors can be incredibly important. Our lives are constantly moving. There is always somewhere to be, something to do, someone who needs our attention or another responsibility waiting for us. We wake up and often reach for our phones before we've even had a moment to acknowledge how we're feeling. We rush through our mornings, eat while thinking about work and move from one task to another without really noticing the day passing by.
And somewhere in all of this, we forget how to simply be.
How often do we drink our morning tea or coffee without actually tasting it? How often do we walk outside without noticing the sky, the trees or the feeling of the air against our skin? How often are we physically present but our minds are already somewhere else, thinking about tomorrow or replaying yesterday?
I ask myself these questions too, because even after years of meditation, Reiki, breathwork and other practices, I still find myself getting caught up in the busyness of life. And I think that's simply part of being human.
This is where I believe rituals can help us.
For me, a ritual is not necessarily something spiritual or ceremonial. It's simply an action we choose to do with awareness and intention. Something that creates a little pause in our day and reminds us to come back to the present moment. It can be as simple as lighting a candle, taking a few conscious breaths, stepping outside in the morning or sitting quietly with a warm drink.
One of my favourite rituals is preparing ceremonial cacao. I love the whole process, from preparing it slowly to holding the warm cup in my hands, noticing the aroma and allowing myself a few moments of stillness. Sometimes I set an intention, sometimes I meditate, and sometimes I simply sit and enjoy the experience. It's not necessarily about the cacao itself, but about the space I create around it. A moment where I don't need to rush, achieve or think about what comes next.
Meditation has also been one of my daily anchors for the last few years. Alongside Reiki, breathwork, spending time in nature and playing my sound bowls, it has helped me develop a deeper awareness of myself, my thoughts, my emotions and my body. These practices have taught me to recognise when I'm moving too fast, when I'm holding tension or when my mind is taking me away from the present moment.
But something I've started to understand more deeply is that the ritual itself isn't necessarily the most important part. It's what the ritual teaches us.
When we first begin practising mindfulness or becoming more aware of ourselves, it can feel difficult to simply sit and be present. Our minds wander, our bodies feel restless and we suddenly remember everything we need to do. Having a familiar ritual gives us something to return to. It creates a little structure and reminds us to make time for ourselves.
It's almost like learning something new. In the beginning, we need guidance, repetition and practice. But as we become more familiar with it, things begin to happen naturally.
And I believe the same can happen with presence.
Over time, we may begin to notice our breathing without needing to sit down for a breathwork practice. We might recognise tension in our shoulders and consciously soften them. We may catch ourselves rushing and choose to slow down. Or perhaps we begin to experience moments of stillness while doing the most ordinary things, like washing dishes, preparing dinner or walking through the garden.
We no longer need to create a special moment to become present, because awareness is slowly becoming part of our everyday lives.
And isn't that beautiful?
I don't think this means we need to abandon our rituals once we've developed a deeper practice. I certainly don't intend to give up my morning cacao, meditation or the other little things that bring me joy. But I do think there is a difference between feeling that we need something to connect with ourselves and choosing to do it because we genuinely enjoy it.
Perhaps, in the beginning, rituals are the anchors that help us find stillness. And later, they become something we choose rather than something we depend on.
There is another side to this that I find interesting. Sometimes we can become so focused on creating the perfect ritual that we forget why we started in the first place. We think we need the right candle, the right music, a beautiful space or a certain amount of time. We might even feel that we've missed something important if we don't complete our morning routine.
But what if we made it simpler?
What if your ritual was simply opening the window each morning and taking three slow breaths? What if it was placing your hands on your heart and belly before going to sleep and asking yourself how you're feeling? What if it was taking a shower and really noticing the warmth of the water against your skin, or sitting with your morning cup of tea without looking at your phone?
We don't need anything elaborate to begin. We just need a little willingness to pause and notice.
And perhaps that's the most important thing about rituals. They are not meant to become another responsibility or something we need to get right. They are there to support us, to remind us to slow down and to create space for awareness in a world that so often pulls our attention in every direction.
As we move through October, with the days becoming shorter, the air a little cooler and nature beginning to turn inward, I think it's a beautiful time to reflect on our own little rituals. Autumn naturally invites us to slow down, spend more time at home and notice the changes happening around us.
Maybe this is an opportunity to create one small moment in your day that belongs entirely to you. Not because you should, not because someone told you it would make you a better person, but simply because you deserve a few moments to reconnect with yourself.
And if you already have your own rituals, perhaps take a moment to reflect on what they have taught you. Are you becoming more aware of yourself outside those practices? Are you noticing more of the little moments throughout your day? Are you finding it easier to return to the present without needing to do anything special?
Because ultimately, I believe that is where our practices are gently guiding us.
Back to simplicity.
Back to awareness.
Back to the understanding that we don't always need to do something to feel connected to ourselves.
So perhaps the question isn't whether rituals are necessary or whether we should return to simplicity. Perhaps rituals are simply one of the ways we learn to return to simplicity in the first place.
And until being present becomes a little more natural, allow yourself to have those little anchors. Let them support you, bring you joy and remind you to pause.
Because sometimes the smallest moments create the deepest connection.
And perhaps one day, you'll realise that what you were searching for through your rituals has slowly become part of the way you live.
One breath at a time.
With love,
Irma

Irma
